ENERGY EVOLUTION

The production of wood pellets has increased dramatically in the last five years due in large part to aggressive emissions policy in the European Union (EU)

EU is expected to strongly increase in marginal demand from recent consumption of 19.5 million tons in 2013 to

35 million tons in 2020

Expected demand in Japan and South Korea will be increase to 9 Million Tons in 2020

North Asia Demand

Local Demand & Supply

In 2014 Biomass pellet consumption in North Asia (dominated by Korea and Japan) will reach 1.71 million tons / year and total supplies for trade is only 1.5 million tons.

In 2012 demand prediction for Korea was 1.5 million tons in 2015 but in 2013, the demand prediction was revised to 2.9 million tons/year in 2016, almost double from 2012 prediction. This indicates that the market size is already exceed 1.5 million tons/year and could be more than 2.0 million tons / year by 2015

Demand development in Japan and Korea is heavily influenced by policy. Policy shifts can lead to significant changes in likely demand development. This will affect North Asian market for traded biomass pellets to reach 12 million tons by 2020

Currently there are 117 biomass power plants generating 1,652 MW electricity per annum, estimates to consume biomass fuel 16.5 million tons/year which equal to 275,000 hectraes of energy plantation.

Local Government Support

According to the AEDP:

2012-2021, the Ministry of Energy have targeted to produce energy in 2021 at total of 9,201 MW in which Biomass is expected to increase from approximately 2,000 MW in 2012 to 3,630 MW in 2021
